Tantalus Cam is Live!

Tantalus Cam is Live!
Phil at Black Tusk getting the first selfie!

One of our big goals at Zenith Guides is to contribute to the wellbeing and safety of not just ourselves and our clients, but all of the backcountry users we recreate alongside. Our newest webcam positioned at the Red Tit Col in the Tantalus Range is part of this effort.

TANTALUS CAM

We believe that the more weather data and information that’s available to forecasters, the public, guides, etc., the better. Even when it means getting some of that infrastructure up ourselves! Last year we worked with the Sea to Sky Gondola to assist in installing their alpine weather station and webcam. Now, this fall, we put up a new webcam in the Tantalus Range.

Jack and Eric getting things set up!

This camera was installed with support from Black Tusk Helicopters and with permission from the Alpine Club of Canada to place it within the Haberl Hut tenure area. Jack Casey, the man at Matzerpiez Equipment Inc. and resident Zenith tech guru, provided software support and built the beautiful timelapse feature (click the 7-day!).

We hope this camera will be useful for planning high alpine adventures in the corridor as well as those planning things specifically in the Tantalus. Keep an eye open for flybys caught by the motion trigger! We’re hoping the unit survives winter storms and ice. If you do happen to walk, ski, or fly by, please take a pic of the station so we can get a sense of what condition it’s in. Reminder not to knock rime off any equipment (cameras or weather stations) as that could damage it. We’ve got one more interesting install remaining this fall so more info on that to come.

EXPEDITION NIGHT - ZENITH KNOWLEDGE SERIES

Don’t forget - TONIGHT (thursday evening) is our first Zenith Knowledge Series night at SkiUphill. We have Jen Godbout talking about expedition planning and meals - because being well fed can make or break a trip. She’s kept Eric alive deep in the Coast Range on more than one occasion.

The talk will be conversational with tips from her experience and plenty of time for questions. If you’re considering that fly-in basecamp and want some tips, this is a great chance. You’ll also be helping support more work on our webcams and weather stations!

Join us thursday night!
